Healthcare Moves: A Monthly Summary of Hires and Layoffs

Here is a selection of recent executive hires, promotions and layoffs occurring across the healthcare industry.

Here is a selection of recent executive hires, promotions and layoffs occurring across the healthcare industry.

Hires

The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) welcomed Brian Anderson as its CEO. He comes to the organization from MITRE, where he served as chief digital health physician.

The College of American Pathologists tapped Michael Fraser as its newest CEO. He previously served as CEO of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

Geisinger named Terry Gilliland as its next CEO (the health system’s current CEO, Jaewon Ry, is transitioning to lead Risant Health). Gilliland comes to Geisinger from healthcare AI company Cogitativo, where he served as chief medical officer and chief science officer.

Genuine Health Group hired Roger Rodriguez as CEO. He has previously served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare and retirement business for the Southeast.

Optum Financial Services appointed Dhivya Suryadevara as CEO. In the past, she has served as CFO of General Motors and Stripe.

StimScience welcomed Tim Rosa, the former chief marketing officer of Fitbit, as its CEO.

University of Florida Health named Stephen Motew as CEO. He comes to UF Health from Inova Health in Virginia, where he served as executive vice president and chief of clinical enterprise.

US Radiology Specialists appointed Lee Cooper, the former CEO of GE Healthcare Systems, as its CEO.

Promotions

The Arizona Department of Health Services named Eugene Livar as its first chief heat officer, making him the first statewide executive in the nation to have this title. Livar joined the state health department in 2012 as an epidemiologist. His appointment to chief heat officer is part of Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs’ Extreme Heat Preparedness Plan.

Cedars-Sinai promoted James Laur to the role of chief executive of intellectual property and health ventures. In this role, he will manage Cedars-Sinai’s Intellectual Property Company, which is a newly created entity. He will also continue to serve as the managing director of Cedars-Sinai Health Ventures, as well as maintain responsibility for the health system’s accelerator program.

UnitedHealth Group CFO John Rex added the role of president to his list of titles at the company. He is succeeding Dirk McMahon, UnitedHealth Group’s president and COO who is retiring April 1. The company has yet to fill the COO role.

Layoffs

Highmark Health laid off 182 workers across the company — including workers at Highmark Health, Highmark Health Plan, Allegheny Health Network and enGen, its health tech subsidiary. 

Johnson & Johnson is shutting down a research and development outpost in Brisbane, California. The closure will reportedly result in 55 layoffs.

Kaiser Foundation Hospitals is laying off more than 70 employees. The job cuts are primarily affecting workers in IT roles.

NextCure announced that it it is laying off 37% of its workforce, which is about 30 people.

North Memorial Health, a two-hospital health system in Minnesota, is laying off 103 workers in both clinical and nonclinical roles due to financial pressures.

North Shore Medical Center in Miami — which is owned by Steward Health Care — laid off at least 152 workers.
